As he is driving home from a ministers conference, Baptist minister Don Piper collides with a semi-truck that crosses into his lane. He is pronounced dead at the scene. For the next 90 minutes, Piper experiences heaven where he is greeted by those who had influenced him spiritually. He hears beautiful music and feels true peace. Back on earth, a passing minister who had also been at the conference is led to pray for Don even though he knows the man is dead. About Don Piper

In 1989, Don was on his way back from a church conference when an 18-wheeler struck his Ford Escort head on. He was killed instantly - pronounced dead by four sets of EMTs. Shortly after the accident, a pastor from the same conference arrived on the scene and began praying for "the man in the red car." God worked a miracle and sent Don back to his now-broken body. To date, 34 surgical procedures have taken place. He walks only as a result of miraculous and in some cases medically unexplainable circumstances. During the time he was dead, Piper was granted the extreme privilege of glimpsing Heaven itself.
Don's experience in Heaven gives him a unique insight into eternity and a strong desire to tell others about Christ. His difficult recovery allows him to identify with the heartbroken and crestfallen, ministering to them with the understanding of someone who's been there. Don Piper and his wife, Eva, live near Houston, TX. They have a daughter, Nicole, and twin sons, Chris and Joe. On January 18, 1989, Piper was driving on an old bridge, and before he cleared that bridge, a tractor-trailer crossed into his lane and hit his small Ford Escort head on. Paramedics on the scene pronounced him clinically dead after the impact. Piper claims to have gone to heaven, where he was reunited with loved ones, but did not claim to have met Jesus Christ there. Within an hour and a half after the accident, another Baptist minister came to the scene as he was reportedly prompted by God to pray for Piper. Ninety minutes after "dying", Don came back to life, and he faced a long, grueling recovery in and out of hospitals and home.

Piper wrote the book in collaboration with Cecil Murphey. It is narrated in first-person from Piper's point of view (although he personally does not remember many of the details of the crash). The book contains two chapters detailing his experience in heaven. The remaining chapters deal with Piper's recovery — an ordeal that included 34 separate surgeries, and many life and spiritual lessons learned along the way.
In addition to his work as an author, he has been a public speaker, actor, syndicated columnist, CBS and CBN Television Network Executive, Youth Minister, Education Minister, Senior Adult Minister, Baptist Student Ministry Director, Pastor, Single Adult Pastor, and Minister of Education, Don Piper is now often introduced as "The Minister of Hope". He also appeared once on the FOX show Hannity's America.
